Start with the job you need done

Dispute

Job: investigate specific report information.

Point to the line, say what is wrong, and attach the record that supports the correction you seek.

Complaint

Job: escalate a process or response problem.

Explain what happened, what you already tried, and the response or deadline that makes oversight useful.

Do not make one action pretend to be the other

A complaint is not a substitute for giving the bureau a clear, evidence-backed dispute. A repeated dispute is not automatically the clearest answer when the problem is how the first investigation was handled.

A simple decision rule

  1. Information wrong? Build the dispute around the exact report line and evidence.
  2. Process failed? Preserve the dispute, delivery proof, response, and dates for an escalation.
  3. Legal judgment needed? Take the receipted file to a qualified attorney.
